The show was recorded at the Famous Ballroom in Baltimore Maryland on August 20, 1972 and hasn't ever been previously available. Philadelphia-born Scott rose to fame in the late 1950s playing the Hammond B-3 organ influenced by blues and gospel evolving into '60s soul jazz. She recorded numerous albums for Prestige, Impulse!, Atlantic, Cadet and Candid performing with countless jazz legends including Stanley Turrentine, Oliver Nelson, Eddie \"Lockjaw\" Davis, Clark Terry and Kenny Burrell.
The album draws upon the extensive links between Black American Gospel music and Soul music, showing how the sensibilities of gospel artists such as Shirley Caesar, Dorothy Norwood, AndraƩ Crouch and others crossed over into secular soul music during this period. Many of the most successful soul artists from Aretha Franklin to Al Green, The Staples Singers to Sam Cooke all drew upon their upbringing in the church for their musical inspiration. This album discusses how important the links between the Black church and Soul music were in creating Soul, and spotlights some of the many important (and also little-known) Gospel artists who walked this line between sacred music and soul, funk and disco in the 1970s and early 1980s.
\"Praise, My Soul\" is a great example of the appreciation for God's sovereignty commonly found in Christian songs and gospel. Inspired by Psalm 103, this joyous hymn praises the glory of God, \"King of Heaven.\" We are encouraged to give our lives to God, and will be \"ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven.\"
