This episode provides examples of: Dropping the Bombshell: Mary Magdalene is stopped dead in her tracks when Jesus, a complete stranger to her at this time, calls her by her real name. He then quotes Isaiah 43:1, which was part of a cherished memory of her father and was something of a Madness Mantra for her to try to stave off her demonic possession. He is not only revealing that He knows her, but that He gave those words to Isaiah. Establishing Character Moment: This is the first episode, so there are many, but especially: Mary Magdalene wakes up with blood on her hands. Then we see a young man running through the street crying for help, saying that she tried to kill him, and that demons live inside her. Matthew's home, wardrobe, grooming, and servants show his wealth. He is so squeamish that he carries a spare set of very expensive sandals so he can change soiled footwear. Yet he pays a man who doesn't want to be seen with him to hide him in the back of his cart and drive him to his destination. Simon is in a fistfight with a crowd wagering on the results, and Andrew is directing him to stretch out the fight a little longer. We learn that Simon is fighting his brother-in-law, and when Simon finally starts hitting back, he is ambushed by his other brother-in-law. Flashback: Mary Magdalene's childhood, when her father points out a bright new star to her, and when he comforts her fears by reminding her of the words of Isaiah 43:1. Also, her father's death. Mary Magdalene being assaulted by a Roman soldier in uniform. Forgotten First Meeting: As Mary Magdalene follows the bird back to town, she bumps into Simon and Andrew as they leave a tavern. But she is focused on following the bird, and they are focused on their own disagreement. Hollywood Exorcism: Nicodemus tries this on \"Lilith.\" It doesn't work, and he is mocked by the Voice of the Legion for his efforts. Incurable Cough of Death: The opening flashback to Mary Magdalene's childhood, where her father is shown to have a nasty cough. About halfway through the episode, another flashback confirms to the audience that he died not long afterward. I Need a Freaking Drink: Mary Magdalene's response after her Interrupted Suicide. Jesus stops her and she leaves the tavern. Jesus: That's not for you. Insistent Terminology: The centurion mocks the pharisees' references to Nicodemus as \"teacher of teachers\". Centurion: Perhaps I wasn't clear, teacher of teachers. You'll accompany me to the Red Quarter, or we'll burn it down with our fire of fires. Interrupted Suicide: Mary Magdalene is on the verge of jumping from a cliff before she's startled by a bird and follows it back to town, where she meets Jesus and is healed of her possession. It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time: Simon's strange nickname for himself (\"Wine Hands\") sounded more clever in his head. Joke of the Butt: Matthew's driver addresses him as \"Mr. Public Anus\". Matthew corrects the pronunciation of his title (publicanus) as \"publi-CAH-nus\". Limited Wardrobe: Matthew's introduction shows him choosing from multiple copies of essentially the same outfit. Madness Mantra: The words of Isaiah 43:1 become this to Mary Magdalene as she fights to stave off her demonic possession. No-Sell: The response to Nicodemus' exorcism. Mary Magdalene (multiple voices): We are not afraid of you. You have no power here, teacher. Obnoxious In-Laws: Simon sees his brothers-in-law as this, and vice versa, getting in repeated fights both verbal and physical with each other. Red Light District: A centurion asks Nicodemus to come to the Red Quarter, to help a woman (Mary Magdalene) who needs a holy man. He replies that it is not the custom of men of God to frequent the Red Quarter. Spiteful Spit: A woman spits on Matthew as he walks down the street towards his tax booth. That Wasn't a Request: When Nicodemus tells the centurion that it is not the custom of men of God to frequent the Red Quarter, the centurion replies that Nicodemus will accompany him to the Red Quarter, or they will burn it down. Voice of the Legion: When Mary Magdalene is possessed by demons, she speaks with several voices at the same time.
Zee and Nathanael share a bedroom in Simon and Eden's house. Simon has trained them that if they want to eat, they need to stay quietly in their room until called. His guests are very polite. Eden is concerned they will get bored in there, but Simon tells her they have much to study, as does he. Then he suggests that she can help him study since he has so much to learn.

The jousting tournament is a bloody and barbaric affair, mostly between knights that have never known real war. Daemon defeats Otto's son, and looks pretty damn smug about it. But he, in turn, loses to the mysterious and handsome Ser Criston Cole, upon whom Rhaenyra bestows her favor. Remember his name, he'll figure largely in what's coming.
[*Choice of dozens of texts, as appropriate for the particular feast or liturgical season.] It is truly right and just, our duty and salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Father most holy, through your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, your Word through whom you made all things, whom you sent as our Savior and Redeemer, incarnate by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin. Fulfilling your will and gaining for you a holy people, he stretched out his hands as he endured his Passion, so as to break the bonds of death and manifest the resurrection. And so, with the Angels and all the Saints we declare your glory, as with one voice we acclaim: [*Choice of dozens of texts, as appropriate for the particular feast or liturgical season.] It is truly right to give you thanks, truly just to give you glory, Father, most holy, for you are the one God living and true, existing before all ages and abiding for all eternity, dwelling in unapproachable light; yet you, who alone are good, the source of life, have made all that is, so that you might fill your creatures with blessings and bring joy to many of them by the glory of your light. And so, in your presence are countless hosts of Angels, who serve you day and night and, gazing upon the glory of your face, glorify you without ceasing. With them we, too, confess your name in exultation, giving voice to every creature under heaven as we acclaim:
To you, therefore, most merciful Father, we make humble prayer and petition through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord: that you accept and bless + these gifts, these offerings, these holy and unblemished sacrifices, which we offer you firstly for your holy catholic Church. Be pleased to grant her peace, to guard, unite and govern her throughout the whole world, together with your servant N. our Pope and N. our Bishop, and all those who, holding to the truth, hand on the catholic and apostolic faith. Remember, Lord, your servants N. and N. and all gathered here, whose faith and devotion are known to you. For them, we offer you this sacrifice of praise or they offer it for themselves and all who are dear to them, for the redemption of their souls, in hope of health and well-being, and paying their homage to you, the eternal God, living and true. * In communion with those whose memory we venerate, especially the glorious ever-Virgin Mary, Mother of our God and Lord, Jesus Christ, and blessed Joseph, her Spouse, your blessed Apostles and Martyrs, Peter and Paul, Andrew, (James, John, Thomas, James, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Simon and Jude: Linus, Cletus, Clement, Sixtus, Cornelius, Cyprian, Lawrence, Chrysogonus, John and Paul, Cosmas and Damian) and all your Saints: we ask that through their merits and prayers, in all things we may be defended by your protecting help. (Through Christ our Lord. Amen.) ** Therefore, Lord, we pray: graciously accept this oblation of our service, that of your whole family; order our days in your peace, and command that we be delivered from eternal damnation and counted among the flock of those you have chosen. (Through Christ our Lord. Amen.) You are indeed Holy, O Lord, the fount of all holiness. You are indeed Holy, O Lord, and all you have created rightly gives you praise, for through your Son our Lord Jesus Christ, by the power and working of the Holy Spirit, you give life to all things and make them holy, and you never cease to gather a people to yourself, so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name. We give you praise, Father most holy, for you are great, and you have fashioned all your works in wisdom and in love. You formed man in your own image and entrusted the whole world to his care, so that in serving you alone, the Creator, he might have dominion over all creatures. And when through disobedience he had lost your friendship, you did not abandon him to the domain of death. For you came in mercy to the aid of all, so that those who seek might find you. Time and again you offered them covenants and through the prophets taught them to look forward to salvation. And you so loved the world, Father most holy, that in the fullness of time you sent your Only Begotten Son to be our Savior. Made incarnate by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary, he shared our human nature in all things but sin. To the poor he proclaimed the good news of salvation, to prisoners, freedom, and to the sorrowful of heart, joy. To accomplish your plan, he gave himself up to death, and, rising from the dead, he destroyed death and restored life. And that we might live no longer for ourselves but
